Why So Many Resolutions Fail: 4 Tips to Set Goals You Can Stick To

Updated: Jan 23

We’re a few weeks into the year, that familiar point where the energy of January begins to shift. The excitement of fresh starts softens, routines feel a little harder to maintain, and those carefully set resolutions may already feel like they’re slipping through your fingers.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. I’m right there too.

I started this year with the best intentions. I wanted to prioritize wellness by going to the gym more consistently, eating more whole foods, and cutting back on my screentime. I also wanted to focus on building my business, taking Full Bloom Journals in a new direction and all the work that comes with rebuilding and refining. On top of that, I wanted to tackle a few small home projects that have been lingering on my pinterest boards for too long.

Each of these goals were importantly to me, but trying to focus on all of them at once quickly became overwhelming. Despite investing time and energy into each area, I found myself feeling like I was somehow failing at all of them.

That realization is what inspired this blog. I’m not coming to you with all the answers, I’m coming to you with my own recent reflections, in case they resonate with you.

The truth is, many resolutions fail because they’re overly ambitious or disconnected from who we are right now. We set goals based on who we think we should be, instead of aligning them with our current priorities, capacity, and energy.

Here are a few gentle ways to make your goals feel more manageable, and more sustainable.

Honour the Season You’re In

Every season of life asks for something different. Some seasons call for growth and expansion, while others ask for a little more rest and grounding. When your goals don’t match the season you’re in, even meaningful intentions can feel exhausting. Honouring your season allows your goals to feel supportive rather than demanding.

Focus on a Single Priority

When we make everything a priority, nothing truly is. Instead of trying to move health, work, home, and personal growth forward all at once, choose one area to focus on fully. This doesn’t mean the others disappear, it simply means they don’t all compete for your energy at the same time. This clarity creates momentum, and focus makes progress possible.

Make Temporary Commitments

Instead of committing to a goal for an entire year, try focusing on a season at a time, or even a month at a time. A shorter window feels manageable and gives you permission to reassess as your life changes. This approach helps you fully commit to one priority at a time without feeling locked in or feeling like you are leaving your other goals behind.

Choose Goals Meaningful to You

It’s easy to set goals based on what we think we should be doing or what looks impressive to others. But aligned goals don’t feel forced, they’re energizing, meaningful, and rooted in what you actually want. When your motivation comes from within, consistency feels more natural, even on hard days.

Here are some prompts to help you prioritize your goals:

  • What season of life are you in right now and how can you honour it through the goals you set?

  • What one area of your life needs your energy most right now?

  • If you focused on one thing right now, what would have the biggest positive impact on your life?

  • Which of your goals feel exciting and inspiring, and which feel heavy or like obligations?

If this resonates with you and you want to dive even deeper, check into the Setting Aligned Goals Digital Workbook It’s designed to help you clarify your priorities, set intentional goals, and move forward in a way that feels grounded and aligned, one season at a time.

Because you don’t need to do everything. You just need to focus on what matters most right now.

Happy journaling!
